After his album drop and headline performance at the California Music and Arts Festival, Kendrick Lamar has dropped yet another music video this week. Directed by Nabil and Little Homies, the video sees the most entertaining interrogation scene since the Dark Knight film, when Batman comes face to face with the Joker.
Don Cheadle, who we know from films such as Iron Man 2 and other Marvel movies, puts in a seriously good performance. He plays the part of a police detective, ready to question Kendrick Lamar, when he is overpowered by Kendrick’s words and comes under some sort of trance. The pair then start to rap in sync with one another, going back and forth with the lyrics to DNA.
Kendrick stands as Cheadle breaks him free from the handcuffs around his wrists, and K-Dot releases Don from being under his control. We are then taken to the streets of Compton where Kendrick spits more bars and plays dice with his crew. As we enter the tongue-twisting section of Kendrick’s single, there’s an extreme close-up on Lamar’s face. We are exposed to flashes of Kendrick’s life in front of the paparazzi to being with friends and members of his family.
Lamar wears a traditional Chinese outfit called a Changshan throughout the video, coinciding with his ‘Kung Fu Kenny’ alter ego.
The man is a marketing genius; he built up so much hype for the release of his album, dropped it the same time as his headline performance and delivered two music videos within the same month. No wonder he’s one of the most talked about rappers on the planet right now.
