Tom Hardy is set to join Sony’s rebooted Marvel universe as he confirms his new role as the comic book antihero, Venom.

Spider Man’s most notorious antagonist first hit the big screen back in 2007, as the villain in the third instalment of the sci-fi fiction films. But this time, the focus is on the man in the black suit. Tom Hardy will play the character of Eddie Brock, a columnist who comes into contact with an alien symbiote which latches onto the journalist, feeding on his hatred and forming the web slinger’s rival.

The challenge for the writers is creating a movie about Spider Man’s most famous nemesis, without actually including Spider-Man. Plus, the pressure is on Sony to deliver a success after The Amazing Spider-Man films were a bit of a box office flop, and they’ve already started planning the next Spider-Man related character films, Silver Sable and the Black Cat. To ensure its success, Sony are aiming for R-rating with Venom, following in the footsteps of Logan and Deadpool, two films which smashed box office records and received nothing but praise from comic book fans and film critics.

The news means that Hardy now switches from the DC side of the comic book movie genre to the Marvel dimension, as we saw him portray the character of Bane in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises, which we can all agree was an incredible performance. Apparently, Tom’s a big fan of venom; Sony released this image of him wearing a Venom t-shirt along with the news of the stars role in the upcoming film.

The film is set to be released October 2018, so we’ve got some time to wait to see if Sony can impress.
