We caught up with Dutch DJ Brooks to chat about music, live performances, dream girls and fashion.

When did you first realise you could make a career in music?

I Think I always knew that I wanted a career in making music. In the beginning I was making music for commercials, tv shows and even video games. But I think it was the moment I had my first international gig together with Showtek that I realised that I wanted to focus more on my own Music and shows, which was about 5/6 years ago.

Name three artists you had on your playlist when you were younger?

Noisecontrollers. A lot of people don’t know this but I started my career as Brooks making hard style. I was so amazed by the sound design those tracks had, and was super curious how those tracks were made. And one way to learn that is to listen to it day in day out!

Avicii. I Think everyone will agree with me when I say he was one of the best If you’re looking at melodies or chord progression. He was the first one that actually made me realise that Its not all about how clean your mix is, or how your tracks are mastered. If you have super catchy melodies it will work no matter what and that’s something I completely missed; big eye opener for me!

Eminem. I think most people have had him in their playlist. And I’m pretty Sure i still know all the lyrics of his older albums haha. I’ve made a lot of beats for local rappers and Eminem’s tracks were pretty much the source of my inspiration for that.

Who’s your biggest inspiration?

That changes a lot! I always try to find new artists, or tracks that inspire me, and of course there are a lot of those. But for now I think that’s Gonna be Droeloe. Just love every single track they’re releasing at the moment. Its something completely different from What i release But i just get so inspired from the vibes and emotion they manage to capture in their tracks.

Where and when was your first ever live performance?

I did a couple of shows together with Showtek. I think when i just signed with their agency the brought me along for some support shows. I think we Did a couple shows in Germany (one of Which was Bootshaus, still Think that’s one of the best places to play) and yeah one of those was a show in Ireland.

Where and when was your most memorable performance and why?

That has to be the world club dome together with Martin Garrix. It was something completely different than i was used to, but to play in front of 40.000 people was something special. Think that was almost a year ago! Crazy how fast time is flying by

Funniest thing that’s happened to you whilst playing a set?

Funny stuff at a gig; I had an Asia tour last year, and my flights to Asia got delayed for like 12 hours so i just barely made it in time for my first gig of the tour. I Didn’t even eat yet so the promoter of the club ordered me some pizza to eat while playing.. Halfway my pizza my fingers were so greasy that I somehow managed to mess up a transition! Instead of trying to hide it I told the crowd exactly what was going on. They all started cheering and I ended up sharing the pizza with the first row in the crowd haha. Had an amazing show for the rest of the night!

If I wasn’t a DJ I’d be…

If i wasn’t a DJ i’d probably be soon geek that would always be in the studio, making music for movies or commercials and stuff. Probably continued the road i was already on! I studied sound design after all so that would be the most logical step.

Fvourite film & TV series?

I think both Vikings & Sons of anarchy take the number one spot! They’re both series i finished within a week, just loved them. If I’d have to pick one I think it’s Sons of anarchy, since I’ve even watched that one multiple times haha.

Dream girl?

Hmm hard question! Guess I’ll go with Elise Trouw! Just discovered her through some friends of mine. Of course she’s beautiful but she’s also super talented. You Should check out one of her live looping video’s! She plays like 5 instruments & has an incredible voice.
