We caught up with internet sensation Giraffage ahead of his European tour to talk about his debut album, summer highlights, fashion and how he spends his down time.

How did you first get into music?

I started playing drums when I was 10 years old and learned guitar shortly after.

Who influences you?

A lot of older bands from my youth – bands like Interpol, The Strokes, Mew. I’ve also been listening to a lot of Yellow Magic Orchestra stuff and its associated acts.

Name three artists you had on your playlist growing up…

Blink 182, Linkin Park & Limp Bizkit.

Where was your first ever gig and how did it go?

I played a frat party at a college. It was okay, I think it went as well as any first show could go. I was nervous for 3 weeks prior to the show.

Giraffage is an unusual name. How did you come up with it and what’s the reasoning behind it?

It’s an arbitrary name to be honest. I wanted to pick a name that was “google-able”. Also giraffes are one of my favorite animals.

Can you describe your sound?

I take older sounds and mix them with new ones. I like using pretty chords and sparkly leads.

Congratulations on releasing your debut album, Too Real. How excited and proud are you with the finished result?

I’m very excited and proud, it’s been 2 years in the making. I literally locked myself in my room for the last 2 years and churned out song after song, then whittling it all down to the best 10.

Did you face any difficulties with this album?

Yes, I faced a lot of self-doubt and uncertainty while writing this album.

You’re embarking on a European tour early next year. What are you most excited about when thinking about it?

I’m a huge food lover, so I’m real excited about eating local food in every new city I’m in.

What are you most nervous about?

I hope I don’t get hit by a train/bus. It’s almost happened a few times every time I’m in Europe.

What’s been your biggest career highlight so far?

Playing this festival called Outside Lands in San Francisco. My parents were there and I think that was one of the shows where everything clicked for them and they understood what I was doing.

What song have you got playing on repeat at the moment?

Lil pump – Gucci gang

If you could collaborate with one other artist, past or present, who would it be and why?

I’d collaborate with Drake because his vocal melodies are always so on point.

What’s been your summer highlight of 2017?

I’ve been getting really into exercising and fitness. This summer has been the fittest I’ve been in a long time. I’ve been feeling great about that.

How do you spend your time when you’re not recording or performing?

Catch me at home hanging out with my cat and eating delicious food.

Favourite film/TV series?

Nathan For You is a current favorite. I also really dig Stranger Things.

Drink of choice on a night out?

Sparkling water (san Pellegrino)

Can you explain your fashion sense? How would you describe your style?

I put in a lot of effort into looking like I don’t put in any effort.

Who would you say is your biggest style icon?

Asian grandmas always have the best style and I want to emulate it more.

Describe yourself in three words?

Aloof, crazy & neurotic.

What advice do you have your any aspiring musicians?

See what everyone else is doing and then do the opposite of that. Also love your parents.

So what’s next for 2017?

Lots and lots and lots of touring!
