Getting dressed up to the nines and taking your partner out for a candle lit dinner and treating them to a bottle of champagne isn’t for everyone, especially if you’re skint. However, some couples enjoy nothing more than celebrating Valentine’s Day by avoiding the ramped up prices of bars and restaurants, by curling up on the couch and throwing a few films.

We’re going to play movie cupid and pair you up with the perfect film on Netflix. So, here’s are our top pick of chick flicks, rom-coms and more.

How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey are in a battle against time as she pushes the boundaries of what she can write in her column on how to make a guy leave her in just 10 days, whereas the heartthrob advertising executive is on a mission to make her fall head over heels in love with him.

Wedding Crashers

Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson play a pair of yes you guessed it, Wedding Crashers, but with one intention. The hilarious film follows the pair as they both bite off more than they can chew at one particular party. Our top pick if you both want a laugh.

The Break-Up

Breaking up is never easy, especially if you still live together. Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston battle it out in their apartment when they decide to call it quits, but will time apart bring them back together?

Hitch

The miracle working matchmaker helps lads get their girl. One of my favourite Will Smith films by far sees ‘Hitch’ teach himself some lessons in love, whilst helping hopeless Albert Brennaman go after the girl of his dreams.

Adventureland

The first coming-of-age love stories on the list; Adventureland follows recent college graduate whose plans to travel around Europe come to a halt when his parents inform him they can’t subsidize his trip and is then forced to take a job at an amusement part. But it’s not all that bad when you can’t take your eyes of one of the other workers.

Love Actually

No it’s not Christmas, but you can still whack on the festive favourite and enjoy all of the love stories that happen in Love Actually.

Dear John

The classic solider comes back, meets a girl, falls in love and then gets sent back to the front line. Yeah, we’ve all seen them, but Dear John sets the bar. Not going to lie lads, be prepared to shed a tear on this one. So if it’s a new partner and you want to show your sensitive side, this is the one, but I suggest not watching it if you want to keep your tough persona.

The First Time

Here comes the second coming-of-age romance story. Two teenagers hit it off at a house party, but she’s taken and he likes someone else but the heart wants what the heart wants. Yeah, soppy I know, but it’s a good film choice.

So that’s it. I hope I’ve saved you countless hours of browsing through Netflix and have prevented any possible arguments; nobody wants to go to bed angry on Valentine’s Day!
