Arsenal put a stop to Manchester United’s 25 game unbeaten run, as they beat Jose Mourinho’s squad 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
After a pretty dull first half, the deadlock was broken as a deflected shot from Granit Xhaka looped over goalkeeper David de Gea to put Arsenal a goal up. Just three minutes later, Arsenal doubled their lead as pinpoint ball from Alex Oxlade Chamberlain found Danny Welbeck, who bagged a header against his former club.
As one manager claimed 3 points and a personal victory, the other didn’t really care. Sunday’s win saw Wenger beat ‘the chosen one’ for the first time in 13 years, but Mourinho clearly had the second leg of the Europa League semi-final against Celta Vigo next week on his mind. The United manager admitted that it would be “impossible” for his team to finish high enough in the table to qualify for next year’s Champions League, and is solely focusing on winning the Europa League and qualifying by that route of admission.
Whereas, Wenger’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League leaves him no other option than to finish in the top four of the Primer League, to which he currently stands 6 points behind Manchester City, who showed no sign of giving up their position after an incredible team and individual performance, especially from David Silva, in their 5-0 whitewash against Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Arsenal do have a game in hand over United and City, but they need to beat the likes of Southampton, Stoke and Everton if they are to secure their top four finish.
