Whether you can’t get leave from work, hate flying or just don’t have the funds to, you could join millions of Britons this summer and have a ‘staycation’. The beauty of one is that you can enjoy all the fun and frolics of a regular vacation, and still get home to sleep in your own bed. No jet lag, no international SIM cards, no sharing a dodgy hotel with your mate that snores, plus you’ll save a tonne of time and money.
So who says you can’t have the holistay of your life? Delete the Skyscanner app from your phone because it’s going to be a scorching British summer right here right now with our super seven city suggestions.
Cornwall
Cornwall has a huge coastline with over 300 miles of beautiful dunes and cliffs, medieval harbours and oak-forested creeks. The outdoor scenery mean it’s perfect for a summer hike, a picnic or a run. Visitors to Cornwall also come to surf or bodyboard, with lessons available on many of the northern coast beaches. Oh, and the super creamy ice cream there is pretty spectacular too.
Manchester
Manchester city is packed with unique and eclectic restaurants, bars, shops, museums and galleries, not to mention the awesome Hotel Football (hotelfootball.com), situated right in front of Old Trafford Stadium. If you’re not a fan of footie, then let out your inner Mario Kart, because Manchester is also home to Britain’s best go-karting track, TeamSport (team-sport.co.uk).
London
Our great and capital city, London, has no shortage of activities. Whether it’s partying at trendy bars or seeing the sites, it’s sure to be memorable. This summer it’s all about Finsbury Park vibes where the Community Festival (communityfestival.london) tickets are just £40 a pop, not bad for a line-up which includes Two Door Cinema Club and The Vaccines. The same weekend Liam Gallagher and Queens Of The Stone Age are headlining shows with Festival Republic (festivalrepublic.com).
Bath
Bath is pretty much exactly as it’s called. It’s one of Britain’s most beautiful small cities, with stone Georgian crescents and terraces dotted throughout. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is known for its natural hot springs so be sure to check in and get some man-spa time in there alone or with the missus.
Brighton
It’s not summer without the beach. The UK’s hippest seaside resort, Brighton is full of traditional English charm mixed in with an exciting music scene and buzzing nightlife. You can walk along the promenade and pier, enjoy fish and chips, or enjoy sunsets on the beach with a can of beer.
Lake District
Good news for outdoorsy lads, the Lake District is a non-stop feast of lakes, valleys, woodlands and mountains. It’s the ideal place to come for a spot of bike riding down country lanes, a full day hike up the hills or a couple of hours scaling the mountains. Edinburgh
If you’re gym bunny on Huel (huel.com), then look away, because Edinburgh is the city of (amazing) greasy grub and booze. Why? Because it’s an awesome party destination – there are more bars and clubs here than any other Scottish city, and they’re a lot of fun too. When you’re done there’s even a picturesque Edinburgh Castle to throw a bit of culture in there before you head home to work out and eat Huel.
