We caught up with upcoming band Skinny Living to discuss their new single, fashion and what’s in store for 2017.
Describe your sound?
Pop music influenced by a lot of other genres
Who influences you musically?
The list is endless really! Bill Withers, John Mayer, Adele, Ed Sheeran, Paolo Nutini! Every time we answer this it feels like we miss people out
How and when did each of you first get into music?
We all got into music really young influenced by our parents taste first of all and then our own taste grew from there. It’s funny the stuff we began to like as we got a bit older was just really a modern evolution of what are parents liked. Like from soul music evolving RnB and HipHop or Rock music to Heavy Metal
When did you realise you could make a career in music?
I think it was after our first couple of videos online got some interest. It was that bit more instant access to a wider audience than the little gigs and open mics. I suppose we new we had the ability to play music but when people started showing they liked what we were doing we thought we could really make something of it
You’ve just released your latest single Why. Can you give us some information about the single? What it’s about and how did it come about?
Yeah, Why is about going through a tough time mentally and someone being there with you through it. Going into the writing session the colour red was really dominant in my mind and as soon as the chords started playing it evoked the emotion that took me back to that place and that is where the lyrics came from.
You’ve also released a powerful music video to go alongside the track. What was the thought process behind the video?
The video is an artistic representation of the time I went through what is explained in the songs lyrics.
You got your first deal with RCA this year and have worked with some incredible song-writers and producers. Tell us how it felt when you signed the deal and became a part of the RCA team?
It was a big moment for us that really opened doors. It felt good meeting a team of people that understood us and wanted to work closely with us to get the best out of what we do. We have always been really ambitious so it’s good to work with people that have a similar mind set

If you could collaborate with one other artist in the world, past or present, who would it be?
It would have to be Dr Dre as a producer
Where is the most memorable venue you’ve ever played?
Leeds First Direct Arena supporting Jake Bugg
What’s the most memorable performance you’ve ever seen?
Fleet Wood Mac at The Isle Of Wight Festival
Who and where was your first gig you ever watched?
Together probably a local artist called Jonny The Firth
Where was the first gig you ever played as a band?
It was at the Open Mic night we all met at called The Admiral Duncan in Wakefield
Have you been to any festivals this year?
Yeah we played at British Summertime Festival
Are you going to any other festivals this year?
Playing at Stanton Calling soon!
What about a lad’s holiday?
We’re hoping we can make it to America together at some point this year!
What does a typical day in the life of Skinny Living look like when you’re not playing music?
Football, beer, family and more music
Drink of choice on a night out?
As a band the go to is Peroni or GnT
Favourite film?
As a band Fight Club
Who’s your biggest style inspiration?
We’ve all got different inspirations it’s more individual items we see rather than an individual person. Although Steve McQueen had style
How would you describe you style (fashion)?
Conscious lol! We used to not care how we looked but it’s really become part of the art recently and some of us more than others have fallen victim to the fashion
Your musicians, you must have some pretty good chat up lines. Give us your best?

Do you have any words of advice for bands looking to sign their first deal? Or anyone wanting to make a career in music?
Find a good manager, stay true to the message you want to put across in your music explore all avenues of sound and don’t pigeon hole yourself into a genre!
