We caught up with dynamite duo Sigma to talk about their new track, fashion and their career highlights.
How did you guys meet?
We met at University in Leeds, Joe was DJing Hip-Hop and I (Cam) was putting on nights around Leeds, I booked Joe to play a couple of my nights, we became friends and started working together!
When did you first realise you could make a career in music?
To be honest we spent a long time making music and juggling other jobs and trying to make enough money to get by, it’s definitely a tough career to break. Just before the release of Nobody to Love we sat down and had a really frank conversation with our management about how we were thinking about giving it all up. Joe was going to become a plumber I think and I had done some music agency work in the past so thought about moving to the other side of the industry. It wasn’t until the reaction to Nobody To Love went crazy, totally unexpected as well. We put it out as a free download and it just started to go off. Our label called and were like ‘ Take that down ASAP’ and we released it a week or so later! The rest is history… a mad history that we still can’t quite believe has happened!
Who is the serious one in the group and who is always joking around?
I think we’re pretty balanced and both have our moments of being serious!
Name three artists you had on your playlist growing up?
Oasis, Snoop Dog & Dr Dre.
Where and when was your first ever live performance as a duo?
Our first DJ performance together was in a pub in St Albans called the Horn. A small venue but we packed it with mates! Our first ever live show together was in Australia at future festival! Talk about being thrown in at the deep end!
What’s the best part of being a duo compared to riding solo?
It’s been super important for us to have each other through this journey, and someone going through exactly the same thing. It definitely makes it easier, being on the road or in the studio on your own constantly would drive us a bit mad!
You guys have just collaborated with Sebastian Kole & Quavo to release your new track Forever. How did the collaboration come about?
We went out to LA for sessions early last year, we had set up a session with Sebastian Kole and the main structure to the track came from that, we then wanted to get a rapper involved and are both massive fans of Migos and Quavo, we reached out and he was up for jumping on a verse. We’ve also released a UK version which was something we’d always had planned and who better than Tinie Tempah and Yxng Bane to get involved, we couldn’t have asked for two better artists to be on the track.
How long did it take to record the track?
It all happened really quickly, we had the rough idea and beat ready and Sebastian recorded the main melody in about half an hour, it all came together really naturally.
How happy are you with the finished product?
Really happy, we love the track and it’s one of our favourite tunes to date.
Where did you first play it live & how was the reaction?
We always start playing tracks out before we release them, we added Forever to our live sets last summer as the first track and it was awesome to see the reaction. It’s definitely something different for us but fans seem to be into it.
If you guys could collaborate with one other artist, past or present, who would it be?
Drake, Kayne, Future would all be amazing and definitely up there at the top of the list.
What song have you got on repeat at the moment?
Etherwood – bears breeches
What has been your 2017 highlight?
It has to be our headline live show at The Royal Albert Hall, that was an insane moment for us and one we definitely won’t forget!
What has been your career highlight?
NBT going to number 1… Honestly the maddest feeling in the world.
Where and when was your most memorable performance and why?
That’s a hard one, we’ve played some incredible shows. The Royal Albert Hall last year is definitely one of them, the history in that iconic venue is amazing. Joining Paloma Faith on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury a few years ago was wicked, walking out in front of that many people was a special moment for us… Also Joe nearly feel off his moving riser!
Who, where and when is your most memorable performance and why?
After we played with Paloma at Glastonbury we caught some of Coldplay’s set! Whether you like them or not you can’t deny how big a show they put on.
How do you spend your down time?
In the studio! We spend so much time in there. We both also like being out in the countryside, going to our local pubs for a Sunday roast. You can’t beat it! I’m into going to Jazz clubs at the minute as well, it’s a great vibe.
Where can we see you playing next?
We’re playing a wicked show in Manchester on the 3rd of Feb at the Victoria Warehouse with Knife Party. Also watch this space for some big London festival news!
If I wasn’t a DJ I’d be…
We get asked this a lot and we just don’t think we’d be doing anything else other than music now.. obviously other than maybe a plumber and working in the other side of the music business!
Favourite film & TV series?
Really rating the new Black Mirror series, it’s so dark!
Drink of choice on a night out?
Beer I guess.
Describe your style/fashion?
We travel a lot so a comfy track suit is a must for flights and trains!
Day to day decent jeans, an array of trainers and jackets! Pretty standard stuff really.
Who’s your biggest style inspiration?
As much as he is a bit of a marmite character, Kanye always comes with the goods! Some of his range is basically a piss take at the fashion industry!
Other than that, Mike Amiri brings it!
What’s your New Year’s resolution?
Continue to be Happy and Healthy.
