Detroit is an American crime drama film surrounding the Algiers Motel incident during one of the most destructive civil distrubances in American history, the Detroit 1967 12th Street Riots.
For those unfamiliar with the Algiers Motel incident, and I’m sure a few of you will have never heard of it, three civilians were killed and nine other injured by white members of the riot task force during the 12th Street Riot.
The film is produced and directed by Kathryn Bigelow, whose previous work graced us with The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark 30; features, among others, Will Poulter, Anthony Macki and John Krasinski.
The trailer begins with a radio broadcast, and a serious of historical images of the racially charged violence. A bus full of young African-American men are forced to take residence in the Algiers Motel “til all this blows over”, but this is just the beginning.
The film is highly influenced by the racial discrimination back in the 1960’s; “when you’re black it’s almost as if you’ve got a gun pointing at your face”, and the extensive force used by the Detroit Police Department and the Michigan State Police towards the black community.
Detroit is due to be released on the 4th August, just a few days after the 50th anniversary of the civil disorder in which forty three people lost their lives.
