MAN On Campus Student City Guide: Edinburgh

For this section of the series we take things out of England and over to Scotland, Edinburgh to be exact. If you’re heading there to study then you’ll already know it’s a beautiful city with castles and stunning viewpoints, however for paying a short visit, the best times of year to visit are for the Fringe festival in August and around Christmas time for the picturesque wintery vibes. TO EAT:

Ting Thai Caravan

If you’re after a cheap restaurant with zero frills in Edinburgh, then Ting Thai Caravan is the place to head. Located next to the uni with dishes from £4, it’s a pop-up venture that became so popular is now a permanent fixture. Their ‘Gai Cha Plu’ small box is filled with ‘marinated chicken grilled, lemongrass, ginger, lime leaf, cha plu leaf, garlic, coriander & coconut milk’, and is sure to bring a taste of Thailand to any library lunch break.

TO DRINK:

The Devil’s Advocate

Whisky and Scotland go hand in hand, and this bar has an array of whiskies from across the globe. The drinks menu also boasts a selection of craft beers, wines and fancy cocktails. If you’re heading out on a night out in Edinburgh then this a great spot for pre drinks, be sure to try the ‘Beet you to Miyagikyo’ which is made with Japanese whiskey served in a dainty china tea cup. Or if you feeling really brave a flight of 5 different whiskies from £22 will warm your cockles.

 

TO DANCE:

Cabaret Voltaire

Hidden in the historical vaults of Edinburgh’s north bridge, this club is famous for its live music and special events. For going out in Edinburgh, ‘Underground Society’ is one of the most popular student nights in the city, playing only house and disco every Thursday night, with just £3 entry and £2 spirit and mixers, it’s a stupidly cheap night.

 

TO PLAY:

Edinburgh Zoo

If you’re looking to fill a study-free weekend with fun things to do, Edinburgh Zoo has 82 acres of land to explore for all you animal lovers. Just outside of the city centre, it has over 1,000 species of endangered and endearing animals including Chimpanzees, Giant Panda’s and the only Koala bears within the UK. Learn about furry friends from educational talks from the zoo keepers or experience close up encounters with Penguins and Meerkat’s alike.
