Unfortunately, with this feature we have to remind you that football didn’t come home this year. However, we thought we’d take your mind of that fact, well at least try to, by mentioning one thing we can all agree on, which is that style never really left.
To celebrate players and their fashion sense, we decided to put together a list of the 10 most memorable fashion moments in English football; from George Best opening his own boutiques in Manchester in 1967, through Liverpool’s white suits for the 1996 FA Cup Final in Wembley, to our very own Dele Alli launching his own clothing line this year.
1967: George Best Opens His Own Boutique In Manchester
In 1967, Manchester United star George Best and friend Mike Summerbee (Manchester City) opened “Edwardia”, a boutique in Bridge Street, Manchester. However, this was not Best’s first venture into the fashion industry, as he opened a clothes shop in Sale (Trafford, Southwest Manchester) the previous year.

It’s April, 1973: Chelsea F.C. midfielder Alan Hudson poses with two models at the opening of the “Swinging London” iconic Mr Freedom boutique, on King’s Road in Chelsea. He was also known to be a big fan of kipper ties.

In the mid-1970s, footballers and friends Bobby Moore and Franz Beckenbauer posed back to back with pistols for this iconic shot. The West Ham defender, who was well-known for his impeccable style, wore an eccentric fur coat.

1996: The Liverpool Players Wear White Suits During The FA Cup Final
No doubt one of the most memorable fashion moment in football: the Reds wearing designed cream suits during the 1996 FA Cup Final at Wembley. The “Spicy Boys”, as they were nicknamed for their attention-grabbing behaviour outside the ground, lose the match against Manchester United.
1998: Beckham Wears A Sarong
Dubbed as one of Becks’ most infamous fashion faux pas, this sarong worn on a night out with then-fiancée Victoria during the World Cup in France in 1998 literally made history. Years later he confessed he would have definitely worn it again.
