Yesterday the Oscar nominations were announced and Ryan Gosling’s La La Land practically cleaned up with a whopping fourteen nominations – a record that takes the film on par with Titanic. So, that got us thinking; what are the three classic films that everybody needs to see?
- The Magnificent Seven (1960)
John Sturges turns Akira Kurosawa’s tale of the Seven Samurai into the stuff of Western Legend. An enigmatic gunslinger rounds up a posse of roguish mercenaries to protect a small town in Mexico from a group of marauding bandits and their leader. Having the villagers build a fortress and train to protect themselves, the film soon becomes all-out war before the bandits take control of the village and our heroes have to fight their way back in.
- The Great Escape (1963)
The Great Escape is based on the true story of a group of Allied prisoners-of-war who managed to escape from an allegedly impenetrable Nazi prison camp during World War II. The film, starring Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough and Charles Bronson (no, not him), focuses on a group of devious and troublesome POWs that are placed at a new prison camp, which was designed to be impervious to escape. Immediately, the prisoners develop a scheme where they will leave the camp by building three separate escape tunnels and using a very famous motorbike.
- The Thomas Crown Affair (1968)
Steve McQueen returns once again as millionnaire businessman and sports star Thomas Crown, who pulls off the perfect crime by orchestrating a four-man raid on a Boston bank to take upwards of $2,500,000 (a LOT of money back then). When independent investigator, Vicki Anderson, gets on his tail it becomes a game of cat & mouse similar to that of James Bond’s Octopussy. Another robbery, but this time there are gunshots and things begin to heat up.
